Penumbra

Today was clouded over, cold, and really windy.
I slept in pretty late.
I watched "Mean Streets" (1973) by Martin Scorsese. It was alright. There was a lot of hand-held shots, probably because of the budget. I think Scorsese uses music well in it. Sometimes there are scenes where the natural sound is muted and only music is heard, which creates an surreal feeling. It is a story about wise-guy New Yorkers in Little Italy. There are a lot of "whadsa madder wid you?" and "wadda yamean?" and "yekiddingme?"; rhetorical tough guy talk. Which is not the films strongest aspect.
Me and Bjorn had planned on going to White Trash, but Blood Red Shoes, the band playing, had sold out. So we ended up going to a bar in Kreuzberg named after a Luis Bunuel film, " El Angel Extermindor" (1962). The English translation is pretty obvious but in German it translates back and forth to mean The Choking Angel in English. I've never been to a bar named after a Bunuel film, but at the same time, why name your bar after a Bunuel film? Maybe because you're pretentious?...or maybe it attracts people like me?...or maybe just because it sounds like a good name for a bar?
